I’ve been waxing lyrical about Andrew Morgan in the pages of AU and Clash at every possible opportunity. I also relayed my love for the Kansas musician on BBC Radio Ulster’s Saturday Magazine. Just thought I’d continue the cheerleading campaign here. Morgan is an interesting character and has led a remarkable life. The years since the release of his debut album, 2003’s Misadventures In Radiology, have been blighted by truly terrible luck. He lost a benefactor with the death of Elliott Smith, suffered hearing damage after being caught up in a hurricane and was also afflicted with temporary vocal chord paralysis.
Earlier this year, he eventually released his second album, Please Kid, Remember. For my money, it’s one of the year’s finest records. It’s a gorgeously brief encounter, 17 segments breezing by in 34 minutes. Morgan is a wistful songwriter, the lucious melodies evoking a particular type of nostalgia, the type that gets its talons into you and won’t let go. There are traces of The Sleepy Jackson, Badly Drawn Boy and Teenage Fanclub in his music’s make-up, basically it’s all pedigree stuff. Damn, that moustache is reason enough to love him.
What’s more, the suddenly prolific Morgan has announced the release of a new 8 track EP, As Long As We Are Together, for mid-November. Check him out, you’ll find it an enriching experience.
As Long As We Are Together is out November 16th on Broken Horse.
Please Kid, Remember is out now.
